Through long and thorough interviews, Errol Morris is able to illicit incredibly telling information. He then compiles his subjects’ stories in the most captivating way. Truly unforgettable documentaries about the fascinating people he chooses are the result. He is also the man who was responsible for Werner Herzog literally having to eat his shoe. Here are two fine films that withstand any scrutiny.
The Fog of War
The Fog of War (2003) is perhaps Robert McNamara’s most effective attempt to tell his version of the history that he helped to create. McNamara was appointed Secretary of Defense under President John F. Kennedy. He tenured the Bay of Pigs, the outset of the Vietnam War, and held his position into the beginning of Lyndon Johnson’s Presidency. The details of his controversial life are presented magnificently.
Mr. Death: The Rise and Fall of Fred A. Leuchter
Mr. Death: The Rise and Fall of Fred A. Leuchter (1999) tells the story of a man whose main mission is to create more efficient and humane capital punishment devices. In fact, he did a major restoration on Tennessee’s historic electric chair. Leuchter is an unlikely and impish man for the tasks he undertakes. Just wait till you see how he spends his honeymoon.
