The Cosmic Americana Band: Adult Lessons

Rating: 4 Pulses

Gathering a large fan base from the growing Cookeville scene, The Cosmic Americana Band has released a new album that throws together a swirling mix of pop rock, country, blues, and folk melodies.

Influenced by musicians ranging from Ryan Adams to Third Eye Blind, the band delivers a solid 12-song album characterized by simple arrangements filled with acoustic melody and rich reverb.

The album paints a picture of the common man attempting to repair his broken relationships, but it seems many obstacles (and maybe too much alcohol) may have obscured his view. The passion and voice of the band are obvious, stripping down to the bare essentials to tell stories of a girl next door or problems with family.

Although the subject matter of the songs is mostly linked to troubled times with loved ones, the catchy phrases and smooth guitar playing make you feel right at home. From the pop-rock influenced “What Turns You On, Turns Me On” to the laid-back country blues influenced “Bluegrass Hippie,” there are no special bells and whistles, no blistering guitar solos, or 20-minute drum sequences on this album?just a couple of guitars, a banjo or two, some bass and drums. The lyrics are far from complex or intricate, but the words correctly fit the mold and are easy to sing along with and remember. Seth Johnson’s vocals are strong enough to get his message across, and the guitar work of Spencer Huffines adds depth and color to their songs. The rhythm section, consisting of Eric Trusty and Andrew Smith, provides a stable environment for this smooth, tight-knit group. This band is a true songwriting band, pushing a cut-and -dry approach, letting the song sell itself.

However, the main issue with the overall effect of the album is the recording. At times, the vocals are dull, and the sound of the music lacks dimension on key moments. But at least the material of the songs shines through these technical issues.

The Cosmic Americana Band is not trying to be something it is not, and the album exemplifies this. The pure, smooth sound translates well for many age groups. The diversity of the songwriting, recognizable lyrics, and the solid musicianship of the album shine through.

You don’t have to be complicated or too technical to play instruments to write a great song. You just have to have an idea and just play it out. The Cosmic Americana Band shows that a few guys, a few ideas, and maybe a few beers can lead to great conversations, great friends and a few songs that just make you want to sing along.
