Mayday Brewery invites local craft beer lovers to release their inner redneck for its inaugural Hot Chicken & Jorts South celebration. Yes, that is “jorts,” as in blue jeans cut into shorts.
Held from 1–9 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22, at Mayday, the event will serve as a fundraiser for The Oasis Center, a Nashville-based non-profit for at-risk teens.
“Cut your jean shorts just a little too short, comb your mullet and let that beer belly hang out,” says Mayday founder Ozzy Nelson, calling the event “a redneck costume party where we drink beer and eat hot chicken.”
Participants are invited to play recreational corn-hole in between bouts of hot chicken and cold Mayday and Jubilee brews. Those with a more competitive spirit can try their hands at a bracket-style Rock, Papers, Scissors contest. The winning trophy consists of a Mayday Jug of Fun customized with Hot Chicken & Jorts 2015 and filled with craft brew.
Mayday will also host a very tongue-in-cheek contest to crown Trailer Park King and Queen during the event. The King and Queen will each take home a customized Jug of Fun.
Hattie B’s Hot Chicken will provide famous hot chicken all day.
This is the third annual Hot Chicken & Jorts event, that has also drawn crowds in downtown Nashville for some six years at, appropriately enough, Paradise Park.
“The concept was created by (Mark Dunkerley) the president of Jubilee Beer, and since we brew it here, we also do an event at Mayday,” Nelson explained how he met Dunkerley at the Taste of Music City in 2010. They immediately hit it off and have been collaborating ever since. In fact, Mayday began brewing Jubilee Beer since opening last fall. The Nashville-based craft beer company donates 50 percent of its proceeds to The Oasis Center, and Dunkerley launched the Hot Chicken & Jorts as another way to raise funding for the project.
He also created a very realistic and hilarious mascot for the event–Randy Jubilee. Google him. Better yet, YouTube him. Randy Jubilee is a character beyond description. But prepare to laugh hysterically.
Additionally, the Hot Chicken & Jorts party will feature live music all day with performances by Dagger Blue and Red Wine Hangover.
Hot Chicken & Jorts will be held at Mayday Brewery Saturday, Aug. 22, followed by Hot Chicken & Jorts in Nashville on Saturday, Aug. 29, at Paradise Trailer Park.
