Questions & Answers

Amanda writes:

“Dear MacMedic: I get a lot of .zip files from clients and I want a way to have them be automatically moved to the Trash after I double-click them to unzip them. Is that possible?”

Thanks for the question, Amanda, and the answer is yes, it’s possible and easy.

Here’s what to do:

Open your hard drive, usually named Macintosh HD unless someone has changed it. Then navigate to System/Library/CoreServices and then launch the Archive Utility application.

finder

Choose Preferences from the menu.

prefs

Select the behavior you want; in your case that would be “move archive to Trash.”

choices

And that’s it. From now on when you double-click a .zip file it will unzip and then the .zip file will be moved to the Trash.

Thanks for the great question, Amanda, and anyone else is invited to send me your questions and I will do my best to put together a tutorial for you.
