Masochism In The Movies

These European erotic dramas explore the lines between seizing and relinquishing sexual control. Most American films simply cannot challenge their audiences in the ways that our European counterparts can. Take films on like these if you wish to think through and past the images presented to you.

Romance

Romance (1999) is directed by the controversial filmmaker Catherine Breillat. After her partner’s desire wanes for her, the protagonist, Marie, explores alternative satisfaction. Like many of her other films, Romance has Breillat’s unorthodox perspectives firmly ingrained. It is graphic and difficult but also rewarding and satisfying.

The Piano Teacher

The Piano Teacher (2001) is directed by Michael Haneke. Repression leads to the piano teacher’s insistence of control in her new relationship. Opposing wills make her desires all the more difficult to achieve.

The film depicts some truly shocking displays that lead you further into her troubled psyche.

Until next time, I hope you have a great viewing experience. Comments are welcomed at cinespire@gmail.com.
