With spring beginning to spring, the Easter season bringing its spirit of growth and rebirth, and Earth Day around the corner, we thought we’d present some info on being a little more in tune with your planet this issue.
Some may have felt a little too close to the weather this past weekend as tornadoes tore through Murfreesboro.
People from far and wide were calling their friends and relatives in Murfreesboro?everyone wants to be the first to know if the editor’s buried under a pile of rubble.
I’m not sure how I can top my last couple of letters, in which I announced the coming of my son, in whom I am already well pleased (just wait until he gets here), and the special April Fool’s installment in last issu. So I’ll just talk a little about my garden: well, right now it’s just a small patch of slightly rocky soil, but I believe it will yield some delicious melons and okra.
At first, Sarah was . . . resistant . . . to my chopping up the lawn. She didn’t see the vision, but she’ll taste the sweet bounty of the earth, and that will erase all skepticism.
Ask me for a squash or jalapeno this summer. There is something spiritual about planting and cultivating food (I guess growing a squash is the closest experience I have to raising a child so far); I hope to grow more and more of my own food in years to come. Besides watching the miracle of a tiny seed bring forth huge veggies after only a few months, food was meant to be eaten fresh, without mystery chemicals and preservatives, and come from the ground, not halfway around the world.
I’d also like Tennessee to start a recycling program where bottles and cans carry a returnable deposit?a ransom for garbage.
“Yar, I have ye bottle and won’t recycle it ’til I get me five cent piece.”
There would be far fewer bottles and cans in the streets and landfills.
While 5 cents may not be incentive enough for you to not toss it out the window, someone hard on their luck could go out and pick up 20 bottles for a dollar menu item?reducing litter, increasing recycling and creating jobs. Why isn’t everyone behind this?
Speaking of paying a ransom, you have to love the U.S. military’s response to the recent pirating off the coast of Africa.
Oh, OK, you have an American captain of a ship held hostage. You want a ransom and free passage? How about we just come out there and have our snipers shoot you all in the head?
That’s my kind of negotiation.
Peace,
Bracken Mayo,
