Contemporary Waters

John Waters burst into the public consciousness with his eternal trash classic, Pink Flamingos, in 1972. He and his star, Divine, had already made two movies together prior to the aforementioned.

After creating several more gems in deliciously bad taste (while honing his filmmaking skills along the way), John Waters began making more palatable movies for the general public, like Hairspray in 1988. Even when doing so, Mr. Waters always leaves his trademark seals on them, and they are always made in the spirit of fun.

A Dirty Shame (2004) is John Waters’ triumphant return to his roots. It stars Tracey Ullman, Chris Isaak, Suzanne Shepherd, and Johnny Knoxville. It is an outlandish tale about people who become sex addicts as a result from suffering concussions. Nuances of sexuality are explored in ways that are virtually unimaginable. It is downright shocking at times, and extremely funny.

This Filthy World (2007) is a one man performance which John Waters has been giving for years now. I had the pleasure of catching his live show at our very own Nashville Film Festival some years back. He talks about his influences, films, associations with friends, and much more. This Filthy World is wildly entertaining, and reveals the witty mind of an unsung genius. BTW, I noticed a copy on the shelves at Video Culture just the other day.

Until next time, I hope you have a great viewing experience.
