Equitable Property Company and Chapman Capital have announced six new tenants for Sewarts Landing—the $400 million, 44-acre mixed-use development at the intersection of Sam Ridley Parkway and Highway 41 in Smyrna. The announcement comes as the development welcomes its first businesses to open: Jonathan’s Grille and City Barbecue.

The new businesses include Harvey’s NY Bagels, Teriyaki Madness, Dave’s Hot Chicken, Paris Baguette, Club Pilates and Brew Y’all, a Mobile, Alabama-based coffee concept.

Other expected Sewarts Landing tenants include Sprouts Farmers Market, Wawa, Wilson Bank & Trust, Keke’s Breakfast Cafe, Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa, Scissors & Scotch, and Encore Nails.

Sprouts Farmers Market, the development’s grocery anchor, is scheduled to open in November.

“Opening our first businesses and welcoming this newest group of tenants is an exciting milestone for our entire team,” said Equitable Property Company President Land Deleot. “Our vision has been to create a true gathering place for Smyrna—a walkable district where people can shop for groceries, grab coffee, work out, meet friends for dinner and take care of everyday needs all in one place. The strength of our tenant lineup reflects the demand for that kind of destination.”

At full build-out, the pedestrian-oriented district is planned to include nearly 280,000 square feet of retail and dining space, 268 residential units, two hotels totaling 240 rooms, medical office space and 12 acres of green space featuring an amphitheater, walking trail, dog park, and playground.

Southern Sunflower Seed Co. began in early 2025 when MTSU student Beckham Scott started building the business with his lifelong friend and cofounder Levi Melton. Since then, Southern has grown from selling at farmers markets to selling through its Shopify store, at local retailers and at in-person events.

As the business has developed, Scott said he has applied what he has learned at MTSU to nearly every aspect of the brand.

Scott’s goal is for Southern Sunflower Seed to move beyond the traditional image of sunflower seeds as a product primarily associated with baseball players and create a brand that appeals to a broader audience, with Nashville hot, Memphis dry rub and Texas ranch seed varieties.

“More important than anything I’ve learned has been my network,” Scott said. Through those connections, Scott has been able to develop relationships involving college baseball, country music, college football, the NFL and Major League Baseball. He recently collaborated with A.J. Cornelius, an offensive lineman for the Dallas Cowboys, through a mutual connection at MTSU.

For other MTSU students considering starting a business, Scott’s advice is straightforward: start.

“Do it and enjoy it,” he said. “People will tell you it is hard, and it is—but it is fun. Make sure to build a valuable network at MTSU and take care of the people who take care of you.”

One East College renovations have begun after several years of delays on the project, which led at one point to the City of Murfreesboro issuing a notice of default just over two years ago. Since then, developers have revised their proposal and expect to have the church’s renovations complete by early 2027. The historic sanctuary and bell tower will be preserved, with the space possibly re-purposed into a restaurant, entertainment, or a live music venue.

Original plans for a 110-room hotel have been revised, and will instead provide 40 condos, 167 multifamily residential units, commercial space, and potentially a new parking garage.

Middle Tennessee State University recently announced plans for a $16 million upgrade to the west side seating area of Floyd Stadium that will provide Blue Raider fans with new chairback seating, substantially wider seating treads and improved ADA accommodations.

The Floyd Stadium West Seating Upgrade is scheduled to begin immediately following the 2026 football season, with work scheduled to be completed just before the 2027 season.

Based on the current design, the project will add more than 2,200 new chairback seats across the west side of the stadium. The new seating below the existing west side walkway will feature 24-inch chairbacks and substantially wider 48-inch seating treads. These amenities provide fans with increased comfort and double the legroom throughout this seating area.

Existing benches in the upper corners of the west side will include backs to the benches for greater fan comfort.

The project will include patios on the north and south ends of the west sidelines that will be open to all fans. The patios will feature concessions, televisions and picnic tables, with a party deck located above each patio. Party decks will also be available to a limited number of fans each game.

Two 57-foot ribbon boards will also be added between the patio and party deck at each end of the west side.

Gilbert McLaughlin Casella Architects designed the project, with Reeves Young serving as the general contractor. Reeves Young has completed numerous high-profile sports projects, including the Western Kentucky Football Press Box Renovation, Mercedes-Benz Stadium Home Depot Backyard, Atlanta Braves Truist Park Pedestrian Bridge, Kennesaw State Baseball Stadium Renovation and Georgia Tech’s Bobby Dodd Stadium Renovation.

Rutherford County recently began building renovations to relocate the Building Codes, Election Commission, Finance, Fire Rescue Administration, and Planning and Engineering departments to 120 E. Main St. in downtown Murfreesboro.

“The Building Codes Department has been fortunate to call the Goldstein Building home for many years, it has served us well and we are excited that this next chapter will keep us right here in downtown Murfreesboro,” Building Codes Director Tanya Bell said. “This move will give us a more modern, functional space that better serves both our employees and the citizens, contractors and development community we work with every day.”

Administrator of Elections Alan Farley believes the new space will benefit the voters.

“We are looking forward to having the space to better serve the voters of Rutherford County, especially during early voting. This new space will consolidate our square footage but most importantly, it will provide a floor plan that allows us to be more efficient in serving the thousands of citizens that choose to early vote in our office each election cycle,” Farley said. “The folks at Kline Swinney have done a great job in helping us design a records storage system to maintain the nearly half a million voter records that we are mandated to keep on file.”
