Heidi-ho, neighborinos. I hope everything is okily dokily. What a month it’s been.
The Mayo family got our toes in the Gulf of Mexico, saw the Blue Raiders win one at Floyd Stadium, got in a last pool swim of the season, an end-of-the-summer celebration, recognizing those with the September birthdays. Played some more chess, tried to sell some advertising. Lil’ Kickers continues.
In one of the more interesting 12-hour periods in my life, as the moon was rising and the sun was setting on a Friday, Sarah and I headed east on I-24 towards the Caverns down past Manchester for a Jacob Collier performance. It was quite interesting to be immersed and participate in his “audience choir.” Talk about a unique approach to music—experimental to virtuosic, impressionistic to familiar, gentle to slamming.
As the moon was setting and the sun was coming up the following morning, Bracken Jr. and I headed the opposite direction towards Nashville to run in the Titans Foundation 5K—a lovely run on a fall morning in downtown Nashville with a couple thousand people. We finished strong, bursting out of the tunnel in front of the dozens of early-morning fans scattered about Nissan Stadium, to finish it up. Challenge complete.
Of course, there was an issue of the Pulse to piece together around all of this as well.
I say: don’t stretch yourself too thin or get exhausted, but live life to its fullest while you can. It may be your only shot to be a publisher, a brother, a spouse, a friend, a ride, a cousin, a pickleball partner, a dad, an audience member, an opponent—make the most of it.
Generally, each year, a fall goal of mine is to cut, scoop, prepare and roast a pumpkin, and then turn that baby into a soup, as I watch a football game, possibly wearing a sweater, and seeing fall leaves outside the window.

How cool that, exactly 18 years after getting hitched on a beach on the north shore of Oahu, Mrs. Mayo and I get to celebrate our wedding anniversary at a Hawaiian restaurant right here in Murfreesboro, feasting upon coconut shrimp and teriyaki meats, accompanied by our kids. Love you, Sarah!
If you have a question about Murfreesboro, before you ask, read the Pulse and you just may find the local answer you seek.
This month, whether you are heading to Music in the Park, to Wine Around the Square, to play Halloween mini golf at Go USA, a football game, Friday Night Live, Harvest Days, to Trick or Treat Around the Square, or to one of the fine restaurants in town, take comfort in the fact that not only is Big Brother watching you, but our local government is helping a private company compile data on your movements, and selling and distributing it to who knows who.
Preserve the spirit of freedom—protect life, liberty and the American way.
May your respiratory systems be healthy and your life situations tolerable.
