Priest Lake Posse

The EP

1 pulses

Priest Lake Posse consists of four gentlemen from Priest Lake, Tenn., who released a four-track recording simply titled The EP this year. Aesthetically, it’s a low-budget little package with overhead shots of the lake and dam printed on computer paper for the cover.  Unfortunately, the disc within doesn’t really outdo its casing.

This is the lyrical work of Ricky Smooth, Baker Da Boilermaker, Swank Peters and Handsome Dan.  Dan provides the beats, all of which are solid, but the lyrics are a far cry from anything that could be considered sophisticated or artistic.  Offering no insight or even comedic value, the rapping is stereotypically boastful and at many points, pointlessly vulgar.

Take, for example, “Ricky Keeps It Real,” which features Ricky Smooth rambling excessively about a girl who needs to douche.  Unless the point of this album is to be ridiculous, all the references to Christina Applegate, Charlie Sheen and Papa Smurf just come off as empty and useless, and these guys are rapping with little sense of rhythm.  The highlight of this EP is its brevity.  Take this to Memphis and see how it blows over.
