Getting your Fur Bent

Murfreesboro can welcome back one of the area’s only all-girl bands. That’s right, Bent Fur is back.

In their latest incarnation, original bandmates Jill Towsend (guitar/vocals) and Rachel Ward (keyboard/vocals) welcome their saucy new drummer, Mary Jeppsen, and the professional bass style of Megan Kellar.

The band’s been through some changes and this is the third official lineup for the girls and their fur since their debut in December 2005. Now they’re back and better than ever, with fun covers like Tears for Fears’ “Head Over Heels,” some polished up originals from the beginning, and some new collaborations, like the upbeat “Got It Good.”

“We’re all on the same page. I enjoy that more than being in a band any day,” Mary says. “We all want to have as much fun as possible, smile at the crowd as much as possible, playing your heart out every time and getting along with your bandmates.”

There’s definitely chemistry on stage and off. The girls are a riot?their favorite group picture features all four of them smoking, wearing fake mustaches.

What does all this mean? It means we’ll be seeing more of them in the next few months, so keep your ears open for their sound. It’ll be a little bit ’80s, a little bit ’90s; like Veruca Salt with a more synth and the occasional glimpse of three-part harmony.

Despite some of the unavoidable sound issues that can crop up at some of our venues here in the ’Boro, the girls have been getting better every show (they’ve had four now). Maybe they haven’t hit their stride yet, some of their equipment could stand to be upgraded, but they’re coming along. Besides, they aren’t going for a snooty crowd of overly hip fans.

“We like to think of ourselves as having a lot of fun,” Megan says, with a grin. “That’s why we take pictures with mustaches.”

These girls pack a serious punch of panache, and a goofy charm that’s hard to deny. Catch them next Sept. 16 at The Muse.
