Photography exhibit Coney Island: 40 Years is on display through Thursday, Oct. 20, at MTSU’s Baldwin Photographic Gallery.
Photographer Harvey Stein first turned his lens on New York’s beachfront amusement park in 1970, capturing history, nostalgia and memories in a black-and-white series that documents an iconic American place. The Baldwin Gallery exhibit features photos from Stein’s published collection, Coney Island: 40 Years.
“Coney Island is different than any amusement park I know,” Stein said. “It is multicultural with people of all shapes, sizes, colors, languages and behaviors. There are no forced enjoyments or phony facades. Coney Island is grimy and authentic, honest and straightforward. Coney Island stays in my mind long after I’ve left.”
Stein, an award-winning photographer, author, educator, curator and lecturer, is director of photography at the Umbrella Arts Gallery in New York City and has had his photos exhibited worldwide as well as included in 50 museums and private collections. He teaches at the International Center of Photography in New York City and also conducts major photo workshops across the United States.
Baldwin Photographic Gallery is located in the McWherter Learning Resources Center, and its operating hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. All photo exhibitions are free and open to the public. For more information, call 615-898-2085.
