“Charlie Brown” Plays Smyrna

Congratulations to former MTSU students Heidi Ervin and Brandon Gwinn from the school’s theater department for taking “Underwear: the Musical” to New York City’s Village Theatre in downtown Manhattan!

Their Erectric Productions company has taken them to new heights as they move on to the Big Apple, where they will know on July 5 exactly when the updated musical, now known as “Underwear: A Space Musical,” will be playing sometime between Aug. 8 and 23.

They will be taking their entourage to New York in mid-June, and are trying to raise a minimum of $5,000 to help with all the staffing, technical producing, fine-tuning and moving expenses for this wonderful stage show, which played to five sold-out performances at MTSU’s Studio Theatre several months ago.

I stated at that time that this outlandish and hilarious show would end up in the annals of theatrical fame alongside “Hairspray” and “Rocky Horror,” and it looks as if their dream is about to become reality.

I encourage all my readers, and followers of stage theater to help out and contribute to these two multitalented and gracious thespians as they make their way up the ladder of the theater industry. Both can be reached on Facebook, myspace.com/underwearaspacemusical, underwearaspacemusical.com, and they are even selling shirts and other memorabilia on cafe

press.com/underwearstore. Break a leg guys, you deserve it!

“You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” begins Friday, May 30, for a six-night, two-weekend showing at Smyrna’s Lamplighter’s Theatre. The performance promises to be a fun couple of hours, and will be well worth the 20-minute drive up Old Nashville Highway. The Peanuts gang opens the curtain at 7 p.m. nightly.

“You Can’t Take It With You” at Murfreesboro’s Center for the Arts, right off the Square, opens Thursday, June 12, and with director Joel I. Meriwether at the helm, I am looking forward to this production. Hopefully soon I will be able to peek in at their progress and give you not only a wonderful preview in the next Pulse, but a sterling review after the show’s opening night.

I did get to peek in at Murfreesboro Little Theatre’s newest production, “The Fantasticks,” which opens Friday, June 13, and I laughed continuously for over an hour just at the shenanigans of the rehearsal. An all-star cast, directed by Wayman Price, will be a hoot to see, and Jamie Storvik/Shane Lowery’s Off-Book Productions are bringing some of the best to the stage with David Cummings, Gary Davis, Chris Todd, Ben Hornsby, Luke Quarto, E. Roy Lee, Emily Lowery, and in his singing debut, Mr. Phillip Storvik.

(Now THAT’S entertainment!)

Congratulations are in order for Dana Richardson, a wonderfully talented Murfreesboro actor, who moved to Roanoke, Va., to work with children at the Easter Seals Camp. You will be missed . . . keep in touch!
