Illuminating personal accounts have been shared by the former employees of both Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin. Their unique perspectives make for riveting viewing.

Downfall

Downfall (2004) is directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel. The famed actor, Bruno Ganz captures Hitler’s idiosyncrasies and hostility with precision. The title could not be more appropriate. Downfall tells the story of Hitler’s last ten days, as told by one of his personal secretaries. Hirschbiegel made great efforts to accurately recreate Hitler’s surroundings. I cannot say enough, as the film is a truly stunning achievement.

The Inner Circle (1991) is directed by Andrei Konchalovsky. The accounts are told by Stalin’s film projectionist, as played by Tom Hulce. The story is based on his life under totalitarian rule, and his misguided love for the corrupt leader. The Inner Circle provides the unique point of view from a repressed citizen who gets to work for the very bureaucracy that rules his life, and that of his wife and neighbors. Good luck, as I don’t think this film was ever officially released on DVD.
