The Delicious Basil Marceaux

Well, what a primary election season! In honor of the 2010 gubernatorial race, I’ve decided to create a dish called the Basil Marceaux. Even though he will not become governor this year, his legacy will live on in the form of a slice of white bread toasted with butter, garlic powder, tomato slices, cheddar and of course, fresh basil leaves—the Basil Marceaux, a true Tennessee treat.

This is also in honor of the Mayo’s especially hearty basil plant. Remember, Basil is beautiful.

Basil Marceaux is such an elegant name though; it sounds like the recipe should be some sort of duck with basil and orange sherry reduction or something more along those lines. But we’ll just keep it simple.

The candidate gaves Tennesseans something entertaining and the rest of the world yet another reason to consider us all backwoods goofballs. But he’s not an actor. He’s under no corporate or special interest control as best as I can tell. He was probably one of the most sincere and genuine candidates in all of Tennessee’s races.

And how often can you say this: probably the best college football team in the state is the MTSU squad. Go Blue Raiders! If they can take care of business when Minnesota comes into Murfreesboro and continue the Sun-Belt success, they should be the highest-ranked team in our great state. The team will have a chance to prove it vs. Memphis and Austin Peay, but I want to see the Vandy or UT in-state rivalry get going with the Blue Raiders.

The annual YMCA dodgeball tournament is coming up Sept. 11. The Pulse team has a few new additions this year, but is predicted by the experts to do very well.

I’m also very eager to check out the Bluegrass Underground series under the earth in Cumberland Caverns this month. Keep checking The Pulse for more on this to come.

I’m glad the local farmers market scene is really picking up. The Pulse says eat local, eat natural.

The boy has been flipping through my books of hundreds of CDs.

“What are these Big Daddy?” he seems to ask.

“Oh, why those are obsolete music storage units we used to listen to back in the ’90s. This whole pile of CDs you’re jumping on can now be stored in a single iPod.”

Having the car CD player may soon be as retro as the 8-track.
