MAY 1-Hot Roddin’

The Murfreesboro Hot Rod Club will hold its weekly Friday Night Cruise Ins in 2009 at The Avenue. The Cruise Ins will start the first Friday in May (May 1) and run through the first Friday in October (Oct. 2).

The Cruise Ins will be held behind Belk, 2615 Medical Center Parkway and are open to all makes and models. Hours are 5-9 p.m.

Participants are asked to donate $1 to enter; there is no charge to spectators. All profits, after expenses, go to local charities.

Also, the Sonic at 1000 Cason Lane will have a bi-weekly Wednesday Night Cruise In from 6-8 p.m. The next three Cruise Ins will be April 29, May 13 and May 27. The Murfreesboro Noon Lions Club presents the seventh annual Fore Eyes Golf Tournament on Friday, May 1, at Indian Hills Country Club.

MAY 1-Celebrating the Quarter Horse

QuarterFest: A Celebration of the American Quarter Horse, will be held at the Tennessee Miller Coliseum in Murfreesboro on May 1 – 3.

QuarterFest is a tribute to the world’s most popular and versatile equine breed, the American Quarter Horse, and will feature trail rides, seminars, clinics with six of America’s top equine clinicians, fun and educational activities for youth, world-famous horses and horsemen and horsewomen, fantastic equine entertainment every afternoon, extensive shopping on the mezzanine, food and a blockbuster Extravaganza show on Friday and Saturday nights.

The Society of Paranormal Investigations and Research In Tennessee will be cleaning Watkins Cemetery, one of the many neglected cemeteries in Rutherford County, at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 2.

Volunteers will cut the grass, pull weeds, clear broken limbs and branches, repair surrounding fences and pressure wash the tombstones at the cemetery, located across from Sir Pizza on Memorial Boulevard.

SPIRIT is a local group dedicated to finding scientific evidence of paranormal activities.

MAY 5-The Sage Age

MaAnna Stephenson will present “The Sage Age: Blending Science with Intuitive Wisdom Workshop” at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 5, at Unity Church of Life.

Stephenson has lived immersed in the relationship between science and intuitive wisdom. She was formally educated in music and acoustics before acquiring a degree in electronics engineering. After a five-year preparation period, she was initiated as a shamanka, the feminine term for shaman. She is a multi-instrumentalist and published composer with international airplay. She is also a nationally recognized wood carver.

Stephenson’s writing has been published in two non-fiction genres and during this workshop, she will be speaking on topics from her book, “The Sage Age √ Blending Science with Intuitive Wisdom.”

The Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast will again coincide with the National Day of Prayer. The meeting will be held on Thursday morning, May 7, at the Stones River Country Club.

MAY 16-May Murf Madness

1st Shot Basketball Foundation presents the inaugural MurfMadness three-on-three basketball tournament at The Avenue in front of Dick’s Sporting Goods on May 16 – 17.

Over 250 teams are expected to participate. All entries must be postmarked no later than May 8. Anyone from grammar school to grad school can play. Proceeds will benefit the 1st Shot Basketball Foundation, which offers an opportunity for at-risk children in Middle Tennessee to attend a summer sports camp for free.

“The goal is to help develop the child into his or her fullness using the four dimensional approach: mind, body, heart and spirit . . . ultimately encouraging them to take their ?first shot’ with confidence and passion,” said founder Andy Herzer.

The event will also feature a three-point shooting contest, around the world and the Slama-Rama Dunkaroo Contest.
